1. Vocabulary Connect TwoIn the following assignment, I gave my Math 8 students a list of vocabulary words that we had been using the last two class periods related to angle relationships. They were asked to write six sentences in which they explained why two of the vocabulary words were connected, or related. I had them complete this assignment in a Google document so that I could easily make comments on each student’s page.
My goal for this assignment was to determine which students were able to make connections between the new vocabulary words in the unit (complementary, supplementary, adjacent, and vertical angles). I gave students credit for completing the assignment, as this was an informal assessment for myself. I provided each student with at least one comment to help them further their connections. Some of the examples of the comments I provided are below. |

2. Proving the Quadratic FormulaThe following assignment was given to students during the period of online instruction due to school closings. I gave this assignment to students over two days. Students had just learned how to solve quadratic equations by completing the square. This assignment asked them to prove the Quadratic Formula using completing the square. I gave the assignment during one lesson and was making comments on student work throughout the day. In the second lesson, released the following day, I posted some hints to help students get started on the problem in case they were stuck.
Our school division determined that all work assigned online could only be given a completion grade. Nevertheless, I still encouraged students to revise their work and do their best, even though wrong answers would not penalize them. You can see this in one of the examples below. My goal in this assignment was for students to make connections between two methods of solving quadratic equations: completing the square and the Quadratic Formula. I think this proof is important for them to see because it shows students where the formula comes from and why it works every time. Some of the examples of comments I provided are below. |
